Why this Master’s degree?

The Master’s degree program in Religion and Culture in Contemporary Societies (“Religionen, Kulturen, Gesellschaft”) is aimed at students who do not have a Bachelor’s degree in the Study of Religions or who have not studied the Study of Religions at the University of Zurich.

The study program enables students to conduct sociological research into the influences and consequences of religions within social, political and cultural contexts worldwide. The program can also be studied on a part-time basis thanks to a structured range of block courses and self-study modules. The focus is on research-based learning. Internships and research stays can be integrated into the program.

The program is interdisciplinary and linked to courses in political science, sociology, ethnology, Islamic studies, etc. The Master’s thesis can be written individually or in a team as part of a larger research project. Religion and Culture in Contemporary Societies can be studied in German or English.

What can I do with it later on?

The Master’s degree prepares students for an academic career or strategic and executive positions, particularly at the interface between society, politics, culture and religion. This includes the areas of:

  • Media, journalism, publishing
  • Education (schools, adult education)
  • Political consultancy, diplomatic service
  • International and intercultural organizations (migration, development aid)
  • Cultural management, congress and exhibition organization
  • Tourism, tour guide
