Researchers at the Faculty of Theology and the Study of Religion deal with issues such as the “good” life or the origin and status of “evil.” They focus on dealing with death and dying, new gender identities and the digitalization of churches. They develop new perspectives on the foundations of European cultural and intellectual history and analyze current trends in connection with existential questions, spirituality and faith. Ecclesiastical and spiritual discourses and communities are examined as well as underlying religious phenomena: Examples include conspiracy narratives, perspectives on artificial intelligence or extremist nationalist developments in India or other regions of the world.
Three institutes and two centers are located at the Faculty of Theology and the Study of Religion (or the two departments). The TRF is also significantly involved in the Center for Religion, Economy and Politics. There is also a Visiting Professorship for Islamic Theology and Education and the Sigi-Feigel Visiting Professorship for Jewish Studies.
Many small and large research projects are based at the TRF. With “Digital Religion(s)”, the Faculty of Theology and the Study of Religion is also home to a University Research Priority Program.
TRF researchers are networked in many ways – both with each other and with academics, research communities and institutions in Switzerland and around the world. The junior academics (WNW) are also organized in project and peer mentoring groups.
