A cotutelle de thèse is a doctorate in which the PhD candidates are enrolled at two universities (in Switzerland and abroad). Cotutelle PhD candidates earn their doctoral degree in accordance with the respective regulations of the two partner universities, but submit only one PhD thesis for joint assessment. The PhD candidates spend a significant part of their dissertation time at the partner university, which enables them to expand their personal academic network and to engage intensively with the different research cultures and academic systems. The doctoral thesis is supervised by two supervisors from the two partner universities. There is only one PhD defense in which both universities are involved. It is noted on the degree certificate that the PhD thesis was written as part of a Cotutelle de thèse.
The UZH TRF is generally open to Cotutelles with recognized foreign universities. However, there is no legal entitlement. If you are planning a Cotutelle de thèse in consultation with your supervisor, please note that a separate cooperation agreement must be concluded between the two universities for each Cotutelle, which regulates the modalities of joint supervision. Please contact the Vice Dean of Studies early.
